Fans believe a relatively unknown Argentinian striker could be awarded the next Puskas title after scoring an incredible acrobatic goal from outside the box over the weekend.

The Puskas Award is given to the player at the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony for the world’s best goal scored that year and 30-year-old Walter Bou has put his name right in the mix.

Playing for Argentine Primera Division side Club Atletico Lanus, Bou was scrambling up the pitch as his side fought to score a late winner when the match was tied 2-2, but nobody could believe what he would do next.

The veteran striker exploited space on the edge of the box and called for a pass to played into him, controlling the ball first time with his chest that set him up for the audacious effort.

Bou’s touch tipped the ball into the air for the forward to hit first time with a bicycle kick that couldn’t have been hit any better as it sailed over the box and the goalkeeper to nestle in the back of the net.

The opposition goalkeeper was helpless to try and make any intervention as he stood rooted to the spot while the ball went in at an improbable angle to clinch a stunning victory for Lanus.

Bau quickly regained composure as he got up off the floor following the volley and celebrated first with his arms stretched wide before pointing to his head as team-mates swarmed around him.

The 90th minute winner that was scored in incredible fashion sent fans wild on social media as they raved over the effort that could see Bau joined esteemed company as a Puskas winner.

‘He deserves the Puskas Award for best goal,’ said one fan reacting to the outstanding strike on X.

Another similarly impressed onlooker said: ‘If he doesn’t win the Puskas award, it will be a tremendous robbery, just as they did to Enciso.’

However, Bau faces serious competition if he wants to win the top honour for the best goal in the world, most notably from fellow South American, Alejandro Garnacho.

The Manchester United star is tipped by many as favourite for the Puskas title after scoring an outrageous bicycle kick against Everton that was later named the Premier League goal of the season.
