England fans attending the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 opener against Serbia will be buoyed by the news that they will be able to drink at the game.

There were fears that this would not be the case with alcohol bans having been introduced for certain Bundesliga matches that are viewed as high-risk.

Some were expecting a similar approach at the European Championship next month but fans will be allowed to drink freely, albeit with some restrictions.

They are allowed to consume alcohol at their seats during most German league matches but rules will be tightened this summer.

Supporters will only be permitted to buy two beers at a time at stadium bars and will have to drink them before taking their seats.

Chief Police Director Peter Both confirmed no alcohol bans had been put in place at Euros stadia and none were planned.

He said: ‘In contrast to the league match, we have agreed that alcoholic drinks purchased in the stadium may not be taken into the stadium.

‘This means that they cannot, as is usually the case, buy two carriers of beer and then take them to their seats.
