Barrow’s players have reportedly been offered a bigger bonus if they lose their Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea than if they win.
The League two side travel to Stamford Bridge in the third round of the competition on September 24 and will seek to shock an upset against the Blues.
However, according to the Telegraph Barrow players have been given an incentive to underperform in the match, raising doubts over the integrity of the Carabao Cup.
Barrow will pay their players £1000 if they lose in west London and just £200 if they manage to pull off a huge upset.
The same outlet claim that the club has declined to comment, claiming that the bonus document contains errors which will be corrected.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the competition the English Football League have also refused to comment but are said to be unimpressed with Barrow’s bonus scheme.
Barrow’s bonus system is not said to breach regulations but the EFL have asked for an explanation given that it’s the first time they’ve come across such issue.
